"I want to be a voice for my fellow migrant domestic workers who are still fearful and lack the courage to share their stories and experiences of abuse. I hope to give strength to those silenced and help them find the bravery to speak out."
Biography
My name is Christine Joy, and I am 31 years old. I was born and raised in the bustling city of Manila, Philippines. Growing up, I dreamed of becoming an educator — someone who could inspire and guide others. But life had other plans. Because of financial struggles, I had to put aside my dreams and start working at the young age of 16 to help support my family.
I am a mother to three wonderful children — two boys and a daughter. After six years of marriage, my husband left, and suddenly, the responsibility of providing for my family fell entirely on my shoulders. It was a heavy burden, but one I carried with love and determination.
In 2019, I took a brave step to work abroad in Saudi Arabia as a domestic worker, hoping for a better life for my children. Unfortunately, my experience was painful, and my employer treated me with cruelty and disrespect. I felt trapped and powerless, unsure how to protect myself.
When I came to the UK, I found a lifeline in The Voice of Domestic Workers. Through their support, I was able to leave my abusive employer and find safety. They helped me reclaim my dignity and, most importantly, my voice.
Now, with my voice stronger than ever, I am honored to join the Future Voices Revolution 2025. This programme is a new beginning — a powerful opportunity to learn, grow, and stand up for the rights of migrant domestic workers everywhere. I want to use what I learn to raise awareness, to empower others who may still be suffering in silence, and to promote the important work of The Voice of Domestic Workers.
Through this journey, I hope to gain confidence and become a spokesperson — a beacon of hope and strength for those whose voices have yet to be heard. Together, we can create change, fight for justice, and ensure that no domestic worker has to endure abuse or fear.
I am ready to speak out, to lead, and to be the voice for the voiceless.
