A Cry for Freedom By Mary

Congratulations to Mary, a dedicated member of The Voice of Domestic Workers, for being selected as one of the finalists in the International Domestic Workers Federation’s (IDWF) Voices for Change Art Contest, held during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. “This drawing is my voice, a reflection of my pain, my silence, and my rebirth as a survivor and advocate.”

With these powerful words, Mary introduces “A Cry for Freedom” an artwork that carries the weight of her lived realities and her incredible transformation. Her piece traces a journey that began in Iloilo, Philippines, and stretched across borders into Dubai and the UK. It is a story marked by exploitation, isolation, and the devastating truths of modern slavery. Among the darkest moments she survived was sexual violence at the hands of her employer’s son. An experience no worker, no woman, no human being should ever face. The tears in Mary’s drawing are not metaphors.

They are real. They are hers and they echo the hidden suffering of countless domestic workers around the world—women who clean, care, and keep households running while enduring abuses that remain unseen behind closed doors. Yet Mary’s artwork does not remain in darkness. At the top of the drawing, a shift appears: light pushing through the shadows, protest rising, solidarity strengthening. We see the growing force of women refusing silence and claiming their right to justice. Across the artwork, Mary writes the words that define her fight: “Our Voice, One Fight, One Future.”

This is where her story transforms. With the steadfast support of The Voice of Domestic Workers UK, Mary found the courage to rebuild her life, to speak out, and to step fully into her power as both a survivor and an advocate. What began in silence became testimony. What began in trauma became strength. What began in isolation became activism.

Today, as one of the Voices for Change finalists, Mary’s artwork stands as both recognition and reminder not only of her talent, but of her tremendous bravery. Through “A Cry for Freedom,” she urges the world to see domestic workers, hear them, and stand beside them.

Mary’s voice rises not only for herself, but for those who cannot yet speak. Her art becomes a bridge from pain to resistance, from isolation to community, from survival to leadership.

Congratulations, Mary. Your courage inspires a movement, and your voice lights the way toward justice, dignity, and freedom for all domestic workers. To see the full list of winners and celebrate their incredible work, please visit idwfed.org
