An Inspiring Journey Inside the UK Parliament

Going to the Parliament with The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW) was truly one of the most memorable and inspiring experiences I’ve ever had. It was not just a simple visit—it was a day filled with pride, learning, and a deep sense of purpose. We were joined by our friends from Kalayaan, and together, we proudly carried the voices and stories of migrant domestic workers who continue to fight for dignity, respect, and recognition.
From the very beginning, the experience felt special. Entering the Parliament was not as easy as one might imagine. We had to go through strict security checks and be escorted at all times. Every step inside those historic halls made me realize how significant it was to be there—not just as an individual, but as part of a collective movement that has worked tirelessly for the rights of domestic workers in the UK.
The moment I entered the building, I was in awe. The structure was breathtaking—the tall arches, intricate designs, and the atmosphere of importance that filled every corner. Standing inside a place where laws are made and national debates happen made me reflect on how far we, as a community, have come. I felt proud knowing that our advocacy, our stories, and our struggles were being recognized within those same walls.

We gathered at the lobby for the Meet and Greet, which was truly a highlight of the day. Our Director, Marissa Delloro Begonia, stood out beautifully in her suffragette outfit, a powerful reminder of women’s courage and determination throughout history. Her presence represented not just leadership, but empowerment—a message that women, especially migrant domestic workers, deserve to be seen and heard.
It was such an honor to meet Members of Parliament like Joe Powell, whom I had only seen on the internet before. Meeting him in person felt surreal. We were able to have a warm exchange and even take a photo together. As a gesture of appreciation, we handed out handmade scented candles and diffusers from VODW—small but meaningful tokens that symbolized our gratitude and the heart of our community’s craft.

Later that afternoon, we were given the opportunity to tour the House of Peers. I watched in fascination as messages were carried from the House of Commons to the House of Peers, witnessing how communication and tradition intertwine in British democracy. Seeing it all unfold in front of me was educational and eye-opening—it made me appreciate how governance works and how every voice, when heard, can make a difference.
Although we spent most of our time in the lobby, I didn’t see it as a limitation. In fact, it made me realize that being present itself was already a huge step. It was a symbol of how far our advocacy has reached—from community halls to one of the most respected institutions in the UK. The experience gave me renewed hope that change is possible, one visit, one meeting, and one story at a time.

As the day ended, I couldn’t help but feel grateful. Grateful for the chance to witness history, to stand in a place of power, and to represent those who often remain unseen.
Thank you, VODW and Kalayaan, for giving me this opportunity of a lifetime. And to our inspiring Director, Marissa Delloro Begonia, I salute your unwavering dedication, compassion, and leadership. Your passion continues to guide and inspire us to keep fighting for justice and equality for all domestic workers.
This experience will forever stay in my heart—a reminder that when we stand together, our voices can reach even the walls of Parliament.
