Before I joined The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW), my life in the UK often felt heavy and uncertain. I came here with a heart full of hope determined to support my family and build a better future. Like many others, I carried my dreams across oceans, believing that hard work would open doors. But life as a domestic worker isn’t easy.
You work long hours in someone else’s home cleaning, cooking, caring, doing everything with love and dedication. But at the end of the day, you return to a quiet room, far from your family, far from the people who know your heart. Sometimes, you go days without speaking to anyone who truly listens. Sometimes, you feel invisible like your efforts are seen but you are not. There were days when I asked myself “Is this all I’m meant for?” “Does anyone see what I’m going through?” “Do I even have rights?” I was lost. I was alone and for a while, I believed that was just the way things were meant to be.
A Door Opened. Finding The Voice of Domestic Workers
Then I found The Voice of Domestic Workers, and everything began to change.
The first time I attended a session, I was nervous unsure if I belonged. But as soon as I entered the room, I was welcomed with warmth, understanding, and smiles that said, “You are home.” For the first time, I met people who truly understood people who shared my story, my struggles, and my dreams. Through VODW, I learned that I was not alone, and that my voice no matter how soft it once was mattered. VODW didn’t just give me support; it gave me strength. It gave me tools to grow, to learn, and to believe in myself again.
Learning to Stand Tall
Through VODW, I attended several classes each one a step toward empowerment.
In Mediacom, I discovered my creative side. I learned how to design graphics, edit photos, and make videos turning my stories into messages of hope and awareness. In the Financial Literacy class, I learned how to manage my money wisely a skill every migrant worker needs to protect their hard-earned income.
The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) class helped me find my confidence to speak and express myself, to stand up for my rights and communicate with courage.
And in IT training, I learned computer skills I never thought I could master. For the first time, I was not afraid of technology. I realized I could use it to connect, to learn, and to advocate for others like me. Each class was more than a lesson it was a reminder that I am capable, strong, and worthy.
A Family Beyond Borders
But the greatest gift VODW gave me was a family. A family made up of women who have walked the same path, who lift each other up through laughter, learning, and love. We may all come from different countries and cultures, but we are united by one powerful truth. We are not invisible. We are workers, yes but we are also mothers, sisters, daughters, and leaders. We are women with dreams, wisdom, and strength that can move mountains.
VODW taught me that solidarity is our power. That when we come together, we can make real change not just for ourselves, but for every domestic worker whose voice is still waiting to be heard.
Empowerment is the Beginning of Change
Being part of The Voice of Domestic Workers didn’t just change my life, it gave me the courage to change it myself. Now, I can speak up for my rights. I can share my story without fear or shame. I can encourage others to believe that they, too, deserve respect, protection, and dignity. VODW showed me that advocacy begins with awareness and awareness begins when we listen to each other. We, domestic workers, are not powerless. We are strong, resilient, and essential to the homes and communities we serve. We deserve to be seen, heard, and valued not just as workers, but as human beings with dreams and rights.
Together, Our Voices Can Change the World
To my fellow domestic workers if you ever feel unseen or alone, please know this. Your work matters. Your sacrifices matter. You matter. Don’t let fear silence your story. Find your voice and when you do, speak for those who still cannot. Together, we are more than workers. We are educators, caregivers, creators, and advocates. We are the heart of homes and the strength behind families.
And with organizations like The Voice of Domestic Workers, we will continue to rise stronger, louder, and prouder until every domestic worker is treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.
