Finding My Voice with The Voice of Domestic Workers

By Mayra

I first heard about The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW) through a non-profit organization and from Ate Grace—someone who had walked a similar path before me. At that time, I was struggling in silence. I felt invisible, unsure of where to go or who to turn to. I never imagined that a single conversation would open the door to a community that would not only welcome me—but help me heal, grow, and rise.

One of the first things I joined was the ESOL and IT classes. I was nervous at first. I doubted myself. But the learning space VODW created was so warm and respectful that I felt safe to try. These workshops weren’t just about grammar or using a computer—they were about reclaiming my self-worth. Little by little, I began to speak with more confidence. I learned how to use tools like Google Docs and Google Drive on my phone, which I never thought I could do. It felt like opening a door to the world.

But VODW supported me far beyond just education. They helped me in the deepest parts of my emotional recovery. As a domestic worker who had experienced trauma and isolation, I carried wounds that I didn’t know how to talk about. VODW’s well-being workshops became a lifeline. They allowed me to begin letting go of fear and shame. I learned how to breathe again, speak again, and believe in myself again.

Socially, VODW taught me how to stand up—not just for myself, but for others too. I saw strong women sharing their stories, raising their voices, demanding change. I learned that we are not alone. That our silence is not our destiny. I was inspired to speak, not just to survive—but to help others survive too.

Understanding our rights as domestic workers is life-changing. It means we can protect ourselves. It means we can say “no” to abuse. It means we can demand to be treated with the dignity every human deserves. VODW gave me the knowledge and the strength to do that.

Today, when I walk into a workshop or speak in front of others, I feel something I never used to feel before—hope. I feel inspired and full of happiness, knowing that I am growing, and that I am helping to create a safer, more just future for all of us.

VODW has given me so much—safety, courage, community, and purpose. They’ve helped me to see that I am not “just a worker.” I am a woman with power. I am a human being who deserves love, fairness, and respect.

My hope is that one day, all domestic workers in the UK will have their legal documents, and receive the fair treatment that every other worker receives. We are not asking for special treatment—we are asking to be seen.

And with VODW by my side, I know this change is possible.
