International Domestic Workers Day is observed globally each year on 16th June, following the adoption of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Domestic Workers Convention No. 189 (C189) on this date in 2011. This landmark convention, which came into force on 5th September 2013, established global labour standards aimed at protecting the rights of the estimated 67.5 million domestic workers worldwide, including those in the United Kingdom.
C189 was the result of a two-year tripartite negotiation among employers, governments, and trade unions during ILO conferences held at the United Nations in Geneva in 2010 and 2011. Its adoption marked a significant advancement in the recognition and protection of domestic workers’ rights.
Today is International Domestic Workers Day — a time to recognize, honor, and pay tribute to the dedication, resilience, and invaluable contributions of domestic workers around the world. These individuals — often working behind the scenes — care for our homes, our children, our elderly, and our day-to-day lives with compassion and diligence. Their labor enables countless families and communities to function, yet too often their efforts go unseen or unacknowledged. On this day, we stand in solidarity with domestic workers everywhere.
We acknowledge not only their hard work but also their rights — to fair treatment, dignity, safety, and decent working conditions. Let us commit to uplifting their voices, supporting stronger protections, and ensuring respect and recognition for a workforce that is essential to the fabric of our society.
To every domestic worker, thank you. Your work matters. You matter. #InternationalDomesticWorkersDay #DignityInWork #RespectAndRecognition
