Solidarity in Action: Over 200 Gather for International Domestic Workers Day Family Picnic

Last Sunday, the heart of London was filled with colour, music, and the unstoppable spirit of domestic workers as more than 200 people came together to celebrate International Domestic Workers Day. What began as a lively rally at Parliament Square grew into a joyful, powerful family picnic — a day that honoured struggle, celebrated victories, and strengthened the bonds of community. This annual event is organised by The Voice of Domestic Workers, Kalayaan and Focus on Labour Exploitation (FLEX).

The day opened with chants echoing across Westminster as domestic workers, allies, families, and supporters marched together from Parliament Square. Banners lifted high, voices united, and the message was unmistakable: domestic workers are organised, visible, and determined. The rally set the tone — one of pride, unity, and collective strength.

From there, the celebration moved to the picnic grounds, where the atmosphere shifted into a beautiful blend of activism and festivity. Families spread blankets across the grass, children played, and communities reconnected. The program unfolded with heartfelt speeches that honoured the legacy of ILO Convention 189 and celebrated the new global milestone of ILO Convention 193, reminding everyone that domestic workers’ organising continues to shape international labour standards.

But the day was not only about speeches — it was about joy. Songs filled the air, voices harmonising in celebration of resilience and hope. Dancers brought energy and colour to the space, turning the picnic into a festival of culture, pride, and shared identity. Every performance carried the same message: we are here, we are strong, and we rise together.

What made the event truly special was the sense of belonging. Domestic workers who often face isolation found themselves surrounded by community. Allies stood shoulder to shoulder with workers. New friendships formed. Long‑time organisers embraced. Children laughed. The entire day became a living reminder that solidarity is not just a slogan — it is something we build, nurture, and celebrate.

As the sun began to set, one thing was clear: this year’s International Domestic Workers Day was more than an event. It was a declaration of unity. A celebration of victories won and victories still to come. A reminder that when domestic workers gather, organise, and support one another, we create a movement that cannot be ignored.

The picnic may have ended, but the energy continues. The solidarity felt last Sunday will carry forward into every campaign, every meeting, every rally, and every act of courage in the months ahead.

Together, we rise — and together, we will win the rights and dignity every domestic worker deserves.
