Volunteering with The Voice of Domestic Workers has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. From the moment I first joined as a Trustee, I felt a profound sense of purpose and responsibility, knowing that our work directly impacts the lives of people who are often overlooked, undervalued, and unheard.
Serving as Chair of the Domestic Workers Branch has been both an honor and a challenge. The responsibility is immense, but it comes with rewards that are difficult to put into words. I still remember the first time I sat in a meeting with a group of domestic workers sharing their stories. Their voices, filled with courage and resilience, told of long days, sacrifices made for their families, and quiet struggles that many of us cannot imagine. Hearing these stories opened my eyes, touched my heart, and strengthened my commitment to this community.
Over the years, I’ve witnessed countless moments that have left a lasting mark on me. There were times when a worker, timid and unsure at first, found their confidence through our workshops and began to advocate for themselves. There were celebrations of small victories, recognition of fair working conditions, moments of solidarity, and breakthroughs in our campaigns that reminded me why every effort, no matter how small, matters. And there were also quiet, reflective moments, listening to someone’s story and realizing that their courage and dignity are a powerful lesson for all of us.
Of course, this journey has not been without its challenges. Leading a branch, guiding volunteers, and navigating the complex needs of the community can sometimes feel overwhelming. But it is in these challenges that I have learned resilience, patience, and the importance of collective effort. Each obstacle has reaffirmed my belief that change is possible when people come together with compassion, understanding, and unwavering dedication.
Looking toward the future, I hope that someone will one day take my place, a person who will continue this work with the same passion, commitment, and heart. This branch, and the community it serves, deserves leadership that not only carries the responsibilities but cherishes the opportunity to make a difference.
Being part of The Voice of Domestic Workers is not just a role; it is a calling. It has taught me that leadership is about listening, that service is about empathy, and that real change begins with giving space for every voice to be heard. I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me, for the lessons learned, and for the privilege of standing alongside a community that inspires me every day. With heartfelt gratitude and hopes for the future, Georgina
