A New Kind of Family Strength Solidarity and Belonging

ree

When you are far from home, the meaning of family takes on a whole new shape. For me, family isn’t just about blood—it’s about the people who see you, support you, and make you feel like you belong. It’s about the ones who notice when you’re struggling, who celebrate your small victories, and who remind you that even in your lowest moments, you are never alone.

Here’s to finding “home” away from home. To the people like me who turned a new place into a home and strangers into a family—thank you. You make the distance feel a little shorter and the world feel a little bigger.

For many of us, the journey away from home is not easy. The UK offers opportunities, but it also brings challenges that test our strength—loneliness, cultural differences, homesickness, and the weight of being far from those we love. There are days when the silence of distance feels unbearable, when memories of home feel both comforting and painful. But in those moments, it is community that keeps us going.

Here in The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW), I have found more than just an organisation. I have found a family. A family not bound by blood, but by compassion, courage, and shared stories. We come from different walks of life, but we carry the same hope: to be seen, to be heard, and to belong.

Being part of VODW is more than attending meetings or activities—it’s being embraced by people who understand your struggles without judgment, who listen when your voice shakes, and who celebrate when your voice grows stronger. It is a place where laughter heals, where tears are shared, and where courage is built, one story at a time.

Thank you, VODW, for being a safe space—for reminding us that we are not defined by the distance from our families, but by the love and solidarity we find in each other. Thank you for turning vulnerability into strength, and strangers into sisters, brothers, and friends.

Even when we are far from home, we are never truly alone. We carry our families in our hearts, and we build new ones along the way.

We are stronger together.
