International Domestic Workers Day - Honouring the Contributions and Voices of Migrant Domestic Workers

International Domestic Workers Day is dedicated to honouring the millions of domestic workers around the world whose hard work and sacrifices often happen quietly behind closed doors.

Domestic workers are the heart of many households. They wake up early, work long hours, and dedicate themselves to caring for homes, children, older persons, and families. Many leave their own loved ones behind to provide care and support for others. Their work is built on compassion, patience, resilience, and commitment.

Yet despite the essential role they play in society, many domestic workers continue to face:

  • Low wages

  • Long working hours

  • Lack of legal protection

  • Isolation

  • Discrimination

  • Abuse and exploitation

  • Limited access to healthcare and benefits

International Domestic Workers Day gives domestic workers the recognition they deserve. It is a day to celebrate their contributions, amplify their voices, and continue the fight for fairness, dignity, and equal rights.

This global movement became even stronger with the adoption of the Domestic Workers Convention 189 by the International Labour Organization. This historic convention recognized that domestic workers deserve the same labour rights and protections as other workers.

For domestic workers, this day means:

  • Being seen and valued

  • Having a voice in society

  • Standing together in solidarity

  • Celebrating their strength and resilience

  • Advocating for safer and fairer working conditions

  • Reminding the world that domestic work is real work

Many domestic workers are migrant workers who make enormous sacrifices to support their families back home. Their remittances help provide education, food, housing, and opportunities for loved ones. Behind every domestic worker is a story of courage, sacrifice, and hope.

International Domestic Workers Day is also about community and empowerment. It is a reminder that domestic workers are not alone. Around the world, organizations, advocates, and communities continue to stand beside them, fight for their rights, and celebrate their contributions.

Today, we honour every domestic worker:

  • Every caregiver

  • Every nanny

  • Every housekeeper

  • Every cleaner

  • Every support worker

  • Every migrant worker who continues to give their best each day

Their work matters.Their sacrifices matter.Their voices matter.

Domestic workers are essential workers, and they deserve respect, protection, appreciation, and dignity, not only on International Domestic Workers Day, but every single day of the year.
