How Legal Protection Empowers Domestic Workers and Protects Their Rights By Halfidah

If I were a domestic worker without legal support, fear would not come in loud moments, it would live quietly inside me, every single day. It would be there when I wake up before sunrise, when the house is still asleep and my work has already begun. It would follow me as I move through each task, reminding me that no matter how hard I work, my security is fragile and easily taken away.
I would worry constantly about being treated unfairly. I would wonder whether my wages would arrive on time, or at all. I would question whether the long hours I work would ever be recognised, or if exhaustion would simply be expected of me. The thought of losing my job without warning would never feel far away. One mistake, one complaint, one moment of honesty could cost me everything.
Without legal protection, my voice would feel dangerous to use. Even when something felt clearly wrong. When boundaries were crossed or promises were broken, I would hesitate to speak. I would remind myself to stay quiet, to endure, to be grateful just to be employed. Over time, that silence would begin to shape who I am. I would learn to swallow discomfort, to ignore my own pain, to place my safety last.
The emotional weight of this life would be exhausting. I would work hard, care deeply, and give my best every day, yet still feel unsafe. There would be no true rest, even at night, because fear does not switch off when the lights go out. My mind would stay alert, always preparing for the worst, always asking, What if tomorrow everything changes? I imagine I would feel invisible in the very place where my presence is essential. The home would run smoothly because of my labour. Meals served, children cared for, loved ones supported, yet my own needs would remain unseen. I would be noticed when something goes wrong, but rarely acknowledged when things go right. That kind of invisibility slowly chips away at dignity and self-worth.
Living without legal support would mean living without certainty, without protection, and without peace. It would mean existing in survival mode, not knowing if my efforts would ever be met with fairness or respect. No one should have to live like this. No one should feel that their safety depends on silence or obedience.
Domestic workers deserve more than just a job, they deserve rights, protection, and the freedom to speak without fear. Legal support does not give special treatment; it gives something far more basic. It gives safety. It gives dignity. And it gives the reassurance that every worker, no matter where they work, matters.
