Essential but Overlooked A Domestic Worker’s Call for Dignity and Fair Rights By Floribelle

This is what I would like to share. As someone who has worked as a domestic worker for 16 years, I have seen and experienced so much, different homes, different environments, different people. But no matter where I go, one thing often remains the same, many people still see domestic workers as belonging to the lower level of work. It is not always said out loud, but it is felt in the way we are treated, in the way we are spoken to, and sometimes in the way we are overlooked.
Over time, that feeling can become heavy. It can make you question your value, even when you know how much you give every single day. But the truth is, domestic work is not less. It has never been less.
I have seen firsthand how important our role is. We are trusted with people’s homes, their most personal spaces. We care for their children, we support their daily routines, we maintain order in their lives when everything else feels busy and overwhelming. We wake up early, we work long hours, and we carry responsibilities that go far beyond simple tasks.
Without domestic workers, many households would struggle to function the way they do today.
Behind every clean and organized home, there is effort. There is time. There is care. There is a person who made it possible. And yet, that effort is often unseen, unrecognized, and undervalued.
This is why I believe there needs to be a broader and deeper understanding, one that recognizes that all forms of work deserve equal respect. No job should be looked down upon when every role contributes to the well-being of others. Respect should not depend on status or title, but on the dignity of the work itself and the humanity of the person doing it.
Domestic workers deserve more than just acknowledgment, we deserve proper recognition. We deserve fair rights that protect us, fair wages that reflect our contributions, and working conditions that allow us to live with dignity. We deserve to be treated with kindness, respect, and understanding, not as “less,” but as equals.
Because behind every domestic worker is a life filled with sacrifices.
Many of us leave our families behind to provide for them. We miss important moments. We carry the weight of responsibility while trying to remain strong in unfamiliar places. We continue to work, even when we are tired, even when we feel alone, because we believe in building a better future.
But strength should not mean being invisible. Hard work should not mean being undervalued. We are workers. We are professionals. We are human beings.
And we deserve the same dignity and rights as anyone else.
After 16 years, this is what I know to be true, domestic workers have always been essential. The only thing that needs to change is how the world chooses to see us. It is time to move beyond old perceptions. It is time to recognize our worth. It is time to treat domestic work with the respect it has always deserved.
