Before I found The Voice of Domestic Workers, I was living each day with fear, confusion, and a heavy heart. I was always looking over my shoulder, unsure of where I stood or what tomorrow would bring. The first time I saw a police officer, my heart would pound—not from guilt, but from fear of being misunderstood, unseen, or unheard.
But everything changed the day I became a member of VODW. The turning point in my life came when I received the result of my NRM (National Referral Mechanism). I remember crying—not just tears of relief, but tears of hope. For the first time, I felt comfortable and safe. VODW wrapped me in the warmth of its community, and I knew I was no longer alone.
Through VODW, I found more than support—I found growth. I began learning English through ESOL classes and improved my confidence with IT lessons. These skills may seem simple to some, but for me, they were life-changing. I use what I’ve learned every day—from navigating daily tasks to expressing myself clearly. It made me feel strong and capable.
The most beautiful part of my journey has been learning to speak up. Before, I was quiet and unsure. Now, I feel confident to talk about my rights and stand up for myself and others. VODW gave me the voice I never thought I had. I am no longer silent—I am empowered.
The emotional support from the community has healed parts of me I didn’t know were broken. I remember how scared I used to be. But the love, acceptance, and kindness I found here helped me heal. I even attended parties for the first time—something I had never experienced before. I laughed, danced, and for once, felt free.
My story as an OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) is not easy to tell. I came from places where I was treated not as a human being, but as property. In Kuwait, I suffered emotional distress. In Qatar, I worked 24/7 without rest—it was exhausting and painful. But now, things are different. I’m in a place where I am respected. I am learning to dream again.
The most important gift VODW gave me is hope. They helped me connect with the Home Office and supported me in processing my NRM. That act alone has changed the course of my life.
Looking ahead, I carry hope in my heart. I dream of getting a good result on my papers so I can truly build a life of dignity here. My greatest wish is for all my children and my family to have a good, bright future—free from hardship, filled with opportunity.
To every domestic worker out there—know your rights, find your voice, and seek support. You are not alone.
And to VODW—from the bottom of my heart, thank you. You’ve helped me rewrite my story.
