Building Confidence and Leadership in Domestic Workers By Marigold

I will never forget the day I first joined The Voice of Domestic Workers. That moment was more than just an introduction to an organization, it marked the beginning of a life-changing journey. Before joining, I often felt invisible, isolated, and unsure of my place in the world. My work was demanding, my voice was quiet, and I didn’t fully understand my rights. I felt alone in my struggles, carrying responsibilities far from home, with no clear support or guidance.

From the very first meeting, The Voice of Domestic Workers offered something I had longed for, a platform to be heard. But it gave me more than that, a safe haven where I could learn, grow, and connect with others who truly understood my experiences. Here, I discovered that my challenges were not mine alone; they were shared, and together we could face them with courage and solidarity.

Through my involvement, I found a confidence I never thought possible. Training and educational programs equipped me with knowledge about my rights and gave me the tools to advocate not only for myself but for others as well. I began to see that empowerment isn’t just about knowing your rights, it’s about feeling strong enough to act on them. I learned to stand tall, speak up, and confront challenges that once intimidated me. I learned that my voice matters. More than that, I learned that when we come together, our collective voices are unstoppable.

What makes The Voice of Domestic Workers truly special is the sense of community it fosters. Here, I found a second family, a circle of friends and fellow domestic workers who share the same aspirations, struggles, and dreams. They understand the sacrifices we make, the exhaustion we feel, and the longing for recognition and respect. In this space, we don’t just support one another professionally; we support each other as people. We celebrate each other’s victories, lift each other through setbacks, and offer compassion when life feels overwhelming.

Over the years, my journey with this organization has transformed me. I have grown into a leader and a passionate campaigner. I have participated in campaigns, events, and workshops that challenged me, expanded my horizons, and sharpened my skills. Each experience has not only enriched my life but has given me the opportunity to give back, to inspire others to find their voices, fight for their rights, and reclaim their dignity.

Life in the UK has not always been smooth. There have been moments of homesickness, uncertainty, and hardship. But being part of The Voice of Domestic Workers has made every challenge more bearable and every achievement more meaningful. Whenever obstacles appear, I know I am not facing them alone. I have found a community that I can truly call home, a community that lifts me, believes in me, and reminds me every day that I am worthy, capable, and strong.

My love and gratitude for this organization are immeasurable. It has given me hope when I felt powerless, strength when I felt weary, and a sense of purpose I had never known before. I am committed to supporting it in every way I can, because it has changed my life and it continues to change the lives of countless domestic workers, giving us all the courage to stand tall, speak out, and know that we matter.
