International Women's Day, observed annually on March 8th, is a poignant occasion for reflection, celebration, and mobilisation for women worldwide. This day resonates deeply with those of us juggling the roles of mothers, migrant domestic workers in foreign lands, and activists championing the rights of our fellow workers. It's a day that encapsulates our journeys, acknowledges our struggles, and highlights the collective power we wield in advocating for change and equality.

The role of a mother is inherently full-time, centred around nurturing, caring, and guiding the next generation. When this role is combined with that of a domestic worker in a country like the UK, the challenges amplify. We navigate the complexities of parenting, often from thousands of miles away, and grapple with the intricacies of working in environments that can sometimes be less than welcoming. The longing for family, the cultural adjustments, and the absence of familiar comforts add significant layers to our daily lives.

Amid these challenges lies our resilience and determination. This fortitude drives many of us into activism, advocating for the rights of migrant domestic workers in the UK. This fight is not just a cause; it's a direct reflection of our lived experiences. We strive for fair treatment, decent working conditions, and recognition of our societal contributions. We aim to dismantle the barriers that hinder our ability to live with dignity and respect.

International Women's Day serves as a moment to celebrate the strides towards gender equality while recognizing the path that lies ahead. For migrant domestic workers, this means persisting in our push for policies that safeguard us from exploitation and abuse, ensuring our work is valued, and that we are afforded the same rights and protections as other workers. We advocate for the freedom to change employers without the fear of deportation and seek paths to citizenship that acknowledge our contributions to our host countries.

As an activist, this day underscores the importance of collective action. It's a call to unite, support one another, and maintain the momentum until all women, regardless of their occupation or nationality, enjoy equal rights and opportunities. Our work is far from complete, but the successes we've achieved remind us that change is possible when we stand together.

To my fellow mothers working overseas, to the domestic workers striving for a better life, and to the activists fighting for justice, let's use International Women's Day as a platform to amplify our voices, share our stories, and advocate for the change we wish to see. Celebrated on March 8th, this day is not merely a date but a global call to action—a day to honor women's achievements, raise awareness about women's equality, and lobby for accelerated gender parity.

This March 8th, let it also symbolize hope and resilience for migrant domestic workers worldwide. Let's celebrate the bravery of those who have left their homes to provide for their families, and the perseverance of those advocating for the rights and dignity of all women. Let's recognize that our struggles are interconnected, and our fight for the rights of migrant domestic workers is integral to the broader struggle for women's rights.

As we commemorate International Women's Day, let's commit to advancing equality every day. Let's educate, agitate, and organize not just for ourselves but for future generations, striving to create a world where our daughters can pursue their dreams without fear, discrimination, or limitation—a world that celebrates and supports being a mother, a worker, and an activist.

To everyone celebrating International Women's Day, especially my fellow migrant domestic workers and activists in the UK and around the globe, let's use this day to strengthen our bonds, share our victories, and reaffirm our dedication to the fight for justice and equality. Together, we are a force to be reckoned with.
