My journey to the UK was not one I ever imagined would be so difficult, yet so full of unexpected hope. My employer brought me here from Saudi Arabia, where I had been working as a domestic helper. Like so many domestic workers, my life has been a series of sacrifices—long hours, loneliness, and the heavy burden of providing for my family far away. Every day was a struggle, but I kept going because I believed in a better future for those I love.
When I joined The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW), I didn’t just find classes or workshops—I found a lifeline. One of the most special experiences for me has been the candle making class. It’s not just about learning a craft. It’s about rediscovering a part of myself I thought was lost. With every candle I create, I learn patience and creativity. It’s a gentle reminder that I can grow, I can create, and I can shine—even when life feels dark.
Being part of the VODW community has meant the world to me. It has given me something I had been missing for so long—a real sense of connection. To be surrounded by people who truly understand my struggles, who listen without judgment, and who lift each other up, has been a healing experience. When I feel weighed down by my own hardships, this community carries me, reminding me that I am never alone.
Before VODW, speaking up about my rights felt impossible. Fear and uncertainty kept me silent. But now, I stand taller. I have learned that my voice matters, that I deserve to be heard and respected. To anyone still trapped in a place of fear or abuse, I want to say this with all my heart: don’t be afraid. Reach out. Ask for help. You are not alone, and you deserve kindness, fairness, and support.
Creative expression has always been a part of who I am. Back in the Philippines, I joined a dance competition at the company where I worked—a moment where I felt free, joyful, and alive. Dance was my way of telling my story without words. It reminded me of the strength and spirit inside me, even when times were hard.
Now, I want to give back. I want to be a mentor and a friend to new members of VODW, sharing the light and hope that this community has given me. Helping others is my way of saying thank you—to pay forward the love and support that saved me.
Looking to the future, my greatest hope is for more opportunities—not just for me, but for every domestic worker who dreams of dignity and respect. I want us to keep growing, learning, and supporting one another, so that no one has to suffer in silence. Together, we can build a world where domestic workers are valued, heard, and safe. Where our stories are no longer hidden, but celebrated.
This is more than a journey—it’s a movement. And I am proud to be part of it.
