Finding Family Away from Home

ree

There are times in life when the weight of the world feels too heavy — when uncertainty, homesickness, and loneliness settle in your heart like a quiet ache. That was my reality before I found The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW).

When I first arrived in the UK, everything felt unfamiliar. The streets, the language, even the air — everything reminded me that I was far away from home. I worked hard every day, but deep inside, I felt invisible. I didn’t know where to go for help, or if anyone would even care to listen. I felt trapped between fear and hope — fear of being alone, and hope that maybe, just maybe, someone would understand what I was going through. Then one day, I found VODW, and everything began to change.

From the moment I walked through their doors, I was met with warmth and kindness. They didn’t see me as just a worker — they saw me as a person, with a story, with dreams, with a voice that mattered. They welcomed me not as a stranger, but as family. I’ll never forget the moment someone from VODW sat with me and patiently explained my rights. I remember feeling so overwhelmed — afraid to ask questions, afraid I wouldn’t understand. But they spoke with such compassion, such patience. That simple act gave me something I hadn’t felt in a long time: hope. Hope that I wasn’t powerless. Hope that I wasn’t alone.

Through their workshops, programs, and unwavering support, VODW has given me — and so many others — the strength to rise again. They’ve built more than an organization; they’ve built a community. A safe, loving space where we can share our experiences, learn from one another, and heal together.

In this community, I found sisters — women who know my struggles, who share my laughter and tears, and who remind me that even far from home, I can belong. Together, we learn, grow, and lift each other up. We find courage not only for ourselves but for those who come after us.

VODW taught me that I am not invisible. That I have rights. That I have a story worth telling. They reminded me that my work — our work — has dignity, and that every domestic worker deserves respect, safety, and recognition. Because of them, I found my voice again. And with that voice, I now stand taller. I speak up. I believe in myself.

So, from the bottom of my heart — thank you, VODW. Thank you for being our light in the darkest moments, for standing beside us, for fighting tirelessly for justice and equality. Thank you for showing us that we are never truly alone, that together we are stronger, and that change begins when we dare to speak.

You’ve given me more than guidance — you’ve given me family. You’ve helped me rediscover who I am. And you’re changing lives — one domestic worker, one story, one voice at a time.

With endless gratitude, A proud member of The Voice of Domestic Workers
