My open letter for the Labour Party Conference 2023

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

Dear delegates and esteemed attendees of the Labour Party Conference 2023,

As a domestic worker in the UK, I feel it is crucial to share my perspective and experiences within the realm of domestic work. Our contributions often go unnoticed, yet we play an indispensable role in society. I am hopeful that my words will shed light on the issues we face and encourage a dialogue for positive change.

Domestic work is both rewarding and demanding. We care for homes, children, and the elderly, enabling others to pursue their careers and aspirations. However, we face challenges such as inadequate pay, lack of legal protections, and limited access to benefits that could provide a safety net for our families. Our significant issue is we lack adequate legal protections. Many domestic workers, particularly those in informal arrangements, face exploitation and mistreatment. Clear legislation and policies to safeguard our rights are essential to ensure fair treatment, safe working environments, and access to healthcare and paid leave.

Inclusivity and diversity should be at the forefront of policy discussions. Recognising the diverse backgrounds and cultures of domestic workers is essential in creating an inclusive and equitable environment. Let us work towards a future where everyone, regardless of their profession, is treated with respect and fairness. I implore the Labour Party and its delegates to advocate for policies that address these concerns.

By standing up for domestic workers and ensuring our rights and needs are acknowledged, you demonstrate a commitment to equality and social justice. Thank you for your time and consideration. Together, let us strive for a more just and equitable society that cherishes the contributions of every member, including the often unseen hands that care for our homes and loved ones.
