The Reality of Migrant Domestic Workers Seeking Safety and Stability By Menchie

Leaving home to work in another country is never an easy decision. For many domestic workers like me, it means saying goodbye to our families, our children, and the everyday moments we wish we could share with them. Yet we make this sacrifice with hope in our hearts. We travel far from home so we can provide a better life for the people we love. We take on the responsibility of caring for other families while carrying the quiet longing to be with our own.

Domestic workers play an important role in many countries. Every day, we help households run smoothly. We care for children, clean homes, cook meals, and sometimes look after elderly family members. Our work allows many families to balance their responsibilities and pursue their own opportunities. Behind each task we complete is dedication, patience, and care. Although our work often happens behind closed doors, it is essential to the well-being of many families and communities.

But while we give so much of ourselves, many domestic workers also live with uncertainty. Our ability to continue working, supporting our families, and building a future often depends on something as simple yet critical as the right to renew our visa.

For me, the ability to renew my visa is incredibly important. It means I can continue working legally in the country where I am currently employed. It allows me to feel safe and protected by the law. Having legal status gives domestic workers the confidence to stand up for our rights and seek help if we are treated unfairly.

Without the opportunity to renew our visas, many domestic workers risk becoming undocumented. When this happens, our lives can quickly become filled with fear and uncertainty. The possibility of deportation becomes real, and many workers may feel afraid to report abuse or exploitation because they worry it could lead to losing their job or being forced to leave the country. Living in that kind of fear is incredibly difficult, especially when all we want is to work honestly and support our families back home.

In my personal experience, renewing my visa represents much more than just paperwork. It represents stability, opportunity, and hope. Being able to continue working in this country means I can keep supporting my family in the Philippines. It means I can help provide for my children’s education, their daily needs, and the future I dream of for them.

Every parent wants to give their children a better life. For many of us working abroad, that dream is what gives us the strength to endure the distance and the sacrifices that come with it. Knowing that I can renew my visa allows me to keep moving forward and continue building that future for my family.

I am also deeply grateful to the organization The Voice of Domestic Workers, which has been an incredible source of support for me and many of my fellow members. Navigating visa processes and legal requirements can be confusing and overwhelming, especially when you are far from home. Having an organization that stands beside domestic workers, guides us, and advocates for our rights makes a huge difference.

Through their guidance and support, I have learned more about my rights and the options available to me. They have helped many domestic workers understand the process and feel less alone during challenging times. Because of their support, I feel safer, more informed, and more confident about continuing my journey as a domestic worker.

For many of us, organizations like The Voice of Domestic Workers are more than just support groups. They are communities that remind us we are not invisible and that our voices matter.

Renewing my visa is not only about staying in the country where I work. It is about dignity, protection, and the ability to continue caring for the people who depend on me. It allows me to keep contributing, keep supporting my family, and keep believing that the sacrifices we make today will lead to a brighter tomorrow.

Domestic workers travel far from home to support others, but we also carry our own hopes, responsibilities, and dreams. With the right protections and opportunities, like the ability to renew our visas, we can continue working with dignity, security, and hope for the future.
