When I first became a member of The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW), I was searching for something more than just support—I was searching for hope, knowledge, and empowerment. Like many domestic workers, I had faced isolation, fear, and uncertainty. My life was shadowed by the unknowns of my rights, my legal status, and my place in a system that often overlooks people like me. But through VODW, everything began to change.
VODW gave me more than a community; it gave me a family that understood my struggles and celebrated my victories. The education I received opened doors I didn’t even know existed. I learned about my employment rights, which are the foundation of fairness and dignity at work. I improved my communication and English skills, tools that helped me express myself clearly and confidently. Most importantly, I learned how to navigate the complex legal and visa processes—knowledge that empowered me to make informed decisions about my future.
For too long, domestic workers around the world have been invisible, undervalued, and vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Many workers fear speaking out because of the risk of losing their jobs, their homes, or their legal status. But silence only allows injustice to thrive. That is why spaces like VODW are vital—they create a safe environment where domestic workers can gather strength, raise their voices, and demand the respect and protection they deserve.
To anyone who feels afraid or hesitant to join VODW or speak up, I want to say this clearly: You are not alone. You are worthy of support, respect, and justice. VODW is here to stand with you, educate you, and empower you. No one should have to suffer in silence.
My journey with VODW has been about more than personal healing—it’s about collective advocacy. I have stood alongside fellow domestic workers during their legal battles and received support when I faced emotional challenges. This network of solidarity has been a lifeline, reminding me—and all of us—that together, we are stronger.
Sharing my story creatively was one of the most powerful steps I took. It was emotional to open up about my experiences, but it also gave me a voice to inspire others and break the stigma around domestic work. Stories build empathy and understanding, which are essential for changing attitudes and policies.
The most profound gift VODW gave me was a new life—a chance to escape an abusive employer and find safety and community. Through VODW, I found my voice and my worth. I realized that domestic workers are not just workers; we are human beings deserving of dignity, respect, and fair treatment.
Looking forward, my hope is that domestic workers everywhere will be recognized as essential contributors to society. We need laws and policies that protect us from abuse, ensure fair wages, and guarantee safe working conditions. It is unacceptable that anyone who works so hard to care for others is left without rights or respect.
We deserve to be seen and heard—not just as workers, but as people with dreams, families, and futures. I dream of a world where domestic workers have the same protections and opportunities as any other worker. Where speaking out is met with support, not punishment. Where our voices help shape policies that affect our lives.
Advocacy is not just about fighting for ourselves—it’s about building a better, fairer society for all. And that is the mission I embrace every day as a member of VODW.
If you are a domestic worker, or if you know someone who is, please remember: your story matters. Your voice matters. And together, we can create a world where every domestic worker lives with dignity, safety, and hope.
