From Learning to Confidence How IT Skills Are Transforming Domestic Workers’ Lives By Floribelle

Good day to everyone, and a heartfelt happy anniversary. My name is Floribelle, and I am proud to be a member of the Voice of Domestic Workers, as well as a participant in the Information Technology class guided by Sir Elijah. Today, I stand not just to celebrate this special occasion, but to share a journey, one that has opened doors for me, built my confidence, and reminded me that learning has the power to transform lives.

Over the past year, I have learned so many things that I once thought were beyond my reach. Being part of the IT class has not only given me knowledge, but it has also given me a sense of empowerment. It showed me that no matter where we come from or what our work is, we are capable of growing, adapting, and achieving more.

One of the first things I learned was how to properly and confidently communicate through email. Before, sending letters to employers felt intimidating. I was unsure, hesitant, and sometimes afraid of making mistakes. But now, I know how to write clearly and professionally. I understand how to use tools like copy and paste efficiently, and features like CC and BCC, which allow communication to be more organized and secure. These may seem like small skills to others, but for me, they made a big difference. They gave me confidence.

I also learned how to create presentations and reports using a teleprompter. At first, speaking in front of a camera felt uncomfortable. I would get nervous, lose my focus, and doubt myself. But through practice and guidance, I learned how to express my thoughts clearly, how to stay focused, and how to speak with confidence. It was not just about learning a tool, it was about finding my voice.

Another important skill I gained was creating a CV or resume. As domestic workers, we often rely on word of mouth or simple introductions when applying for jobs. But now, I can present myself professionally. I can show my experience, my skills, and my value in a way that reflects who I truly am. It gave me a sense of pride to see my journey written down, to recognize my own worth.

There were also practical lessons that made everyday life easier. I learned how to manage my phone’s storage when it becomes full, and how to purchase additional space online. I learned how to create a recovery email, something so important yet often overlooked. Knowing that I can protect my account and recover it if something goes wrong gives me peace of mind.

And even now, our learning continues. We are exploring the difference between PDF and Docs, improving how we complete assignments, and becoming more confident in using digital tools. With the guidance and patience of Sir Elijah, every lesson becomes an opportunity, not just to learn, but to grow.

Being part of this IT class has truly changed something in me. As domestic workers, communication has not always been easy especially in a place like London, where everything moves fast and expectations are high. There are moments when we feel left behind, when we struggle to keep up, when we feel small in a world that demands so much.

But through this class, I no longer feel that way.

These skills have given me the ability to connect, to communicate, and to participate. They have helped me become more confident not just in my work, but in myself. I feel more prepared, more capable, and more hopeful for the future.

This journey is not just mine, it belongs to all of us who continue to learn, despite challenges. To all domestic workers who are trying, who are growing, who are taking small steps forward every day, this is for you. Because learning is not just about gaining knowledge. It is about reclaiming confidence. It is about opening new possibilities. It is about believing that we can be more than what the world expects of us.

Once again, I am Floribelle, a proud student of Sir Elijah and a grateful member of the Voice of Domestic Workers. Thank you very much.
