Honouring Strength and Solidarity: Celebrating International Domestic Workers Day 2025

Every year on June 16, we come together across the globe to celebrate International Domestic Workers Day—a date that commemorates a landmark victory in the fight for workers’ rights. It marks the adoption of the International Labour Organization’s Domestic Workers Convention 189, a global standard that came into force on September 5, 2013, recognizing and protecting the rights of over 76.5 million domestic workers worldwide.

This convention affirms what we’ve always known: domestic work is real work. It demands skill, commitment, and strength, yet for far too long, it has gone undervalued and unprotected. Today, we honour those who care for our families, clean our homes, and keep our lives running smoothly—migrant domestic workers, whose labour is indispensable and whose humanity is too often denied.

June 15: A Day of Resistance and Celebration

On Sunday, June 15, 2025, the day before the official commemoration, we gather in the heart of Westminster—Old Palace Yard, UK Parliament—to uplift the voices and victories of domestic workers in the UK and around the world. This is more than a celebration; it’s a call to action.

Amid ongoing threats posed by the Borders, Security, and Asylum Immigration Bill, domestic workers once again find themselves at the sharp edge of hostile immigration policies. These laws do not exist in isolation—they are part of a long-standing system that criminalises migrants, tears apart families, and strips away fundamental rights.

Our Demands Are Clear:

  • End the Hostile Environment.

  • Restore the original Overseas Domestic Worker Visa, with:

    – The right to renew the visa

    – The right to settlement

    – The right to apply for British citizenship

This isn’t just about policy—it’s about people. It's about real lives, real futures, and the right to live and work with dignity and security.

Join the Celebration & Solidarity

We invite everyone—migrant workers, allies, community members, and advocates—to stand with us in unity and joy. Our afternoon gathering is filled with food, presentations, music, dance, and art. It is a celebration of culture, resilience, and resistance.

🗓️ Date: Sunday, June 15, 2025

🕐 Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

📍 Location: Old Palace Yard, UK Parliament

This event is proudly co-organised by The Voice of Domestic Workers and Kalayaan, two organisations dedicated to fighting for justice, recognition, and protection of domestic workers.

Why This Matters

In a world shaped by borders, walls, and systemic exclusion, we choose solidarity without borders. We believe in a future where every person—regardless of immigration status—can live in freedom, dignity, justice, and abundance.

On this day, we raise our voices and raise each other. Because when domestic workers rise, we all rise.

Join Us in Supporting Migrant Domestic Workers Escaping Abuse

Migrant domestic workers who have fled abusive employment urgently need your help. They’ve left behind exploitation and are taking brave steps toward safety—but they need support for basic needs like shelter, food, clothing, and counseling.

"With your donation, we can provide immediate relief and a pathway to rebuilding lives in dignity and safety."

Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us provide essentials, temporary housing, job training, and emotional support. Together, we can offer a lifeline to those starting over.

Donate today to make an impact and be a part of their journey to freedom, recovery, and empowerment.
