I joined VODW's classes wanting simply to gain more knowledge, and across a year and a half spent in ESOL, IT, Mediacom, Body, and Financial Literacy, I found something that mattered even more than the individual lessons, a renewed sense of confidence in myself. I arrived happy, ready to learn, and that openness carried me all the way through to graduation.
Ask me what I learned, and my answer is refreshingly direct, more confidence. It is easy to overlook how significant that is. For many domestic workers, years of long hours and quiet service can wear away at a sense of self worth. Reconnecting with myself during my sessions became one of the most meaningful parts of the experience, a reminder that I was allowed to grow, not just to work.
I see the classes as very important to me, driven by a simple, honest desire to keep learning more. That desire earned me recognition along the way, and when the time came to graduate, I felt, in my own words, very happy. It is a small phrase, but it carries the full weight of a milestone reached after real effort and real vulnerability in stepping into a classroom in the first place.
My message to my teachers is brief but sincere, thank you so much for this opportunity, and my hope for what comes next is simply to enjoy the journey ahead.
There is something quietly powerful in that simplicity. My story is a gentle reminder of a truth VODW holds at its core, that learning has no age limit and no deadline, and that confidence built in a classroom becomes confidence carried into every part of life, including the courage to know and stand up for my rights as a domestic worker. My journey may be told in a few honest sentences, but within them lives a woman who chose to invest in herself, and who found, in doing so, a version of herself worth being proud of.
