Learning That My Effort Matters More Than Perfection Changed Everything By Kabiba Sapal

I joined VODW wanting to learn, to grow, and to meet other domestic workers, three goals that reflect just how much community mattered to me alongside the classes themselves. I arrived carrying a mix of nervous excitement and happiness, ready to see what a year and a half of ESOL, IT, Mediacom, and Financial Literacy classes might bring.

What I found was a set of new practical skills paired with a steadily growing sense of confidence in myself. During my sessions, I felt reconnected with myself, watched my stress ease, and built genuine confidence, growth that clearly meant a great deal to me. One memory in particular has stayed with me since, words from my teacher telling me that my effort matters more than being perfect. It is a lesson that reaches far beyond the classroom, a reminder that growth does not require flawlessness, only consistent, honest effort.

I found the lessons and skills genuinely helpful and useful in my everyday life, and by the end of my sessions, I am simply and clearly more confident.

Graduation brought a pleasant surprise, I had not expected the recognition that came my way, a reaction that speaks to how much VODW values celebrating every member's progress, whether or not she walked in expecting it.

My gratitude toward my teachers is warm and appreciative, thanks for their support and for the opportunity to learn. Looking ahead, my hope circles back to where I started, wanting to keep learning, growing, and meeting other domestic workers along the way.

My story is a gentle reminder that community and confidence often grow together, each one reinforcing the other, and that a single sentence from a caring teacher, your effort matters more than being perfect, can stay with a person long after the class itself has ended, quietly shaping how I meet every challenge that follows, including the ongoing fight for the rights and protections VODW continues to campaign for on behalf of domestic workers everywhere.
