Modern Day Heroes The Untold Strength and Sacrifices of Domestic Workers By Marilou

As one of the trustees of this organisation and as a proud domestic worker, I carry both responsibility and hope in my heart. My journey is deeply intertwined with the very people we serve. I have lived the same realities, faced the same uncertainties, and carried the same quiet resilience that so many domestic workers hold every single day. That is why my vision for this organisation goes beyond simply responding to hardship. I dream of a future where our work becomes a bridge to dignity, to opportunity, to a life where every domestic worker is not only protected, but truly valued.

I hope for a future where no domestic worker feels invisible. Where their voices are heard, their rights are upheld, and their sacrifices are recognised, not just in moments of crisis, but in everyday life. A future where support does not begin only when something goes wrong, but where systems are built to ensure that things go right from the very beginning. Because we deserve more than just protection, we deserve progress. We deserve the chance to grow, to learn, to build sustainable lives, and to create opportunities not just for ourselves, but for the families and communities we support.

But this kind of future cannot be built by one person, or even one organisation alone. The strength of this movement lies in all of us, domestic workers, advocates, allies, and supporters coming together with a shared purpose. Every story shared, every hand extended, every act of courage adds another layer to what we are building. Change happens in these small, collective efforts. And while the road ahead may sometimes feel uncertain, there is power in knowing that we are shaping it together. The future may not always be clear, but our history, our legacy, is something we are actively creating with every step we take.

To all domestic workers, and to everyone who stands beside us, every day, we show up with strength, even when we feel weak. We chase dreams that often feel just out of reach. We give our time, our energy, and our care to others, sometimes at the cost of our own comfort. We work tirelessly, often unseen, often unrecognised but never without purpose. And still, we are only human.

There are days when the weight becomes too heavy. Days when the distance from our loved ones feels unbearable. Days when exhaustion, frustration, and disappointment settle deeply into our hearts. We experience failure. We feel the pressure. We question ourselves. We break down.

But even in those moments, we rise. Because within us is a strength that cannot be easily shaken. A resilience built from every challenge we have endured and every obstacle we have overcome. We continue not because it is easy, but because we believe in something greater than our struggles. We hold on to hope, even when it feels fragile. We hold on to faith, even when the path ahead is unclear.

Though we may be far from home, separated by distance and circumstance, we remain connected by love, the love we carry for our families, and the love that continues to guide us forward. That love becomes our anchor. It reminds us why we started, and why we must keep going.

Life is short, as many say, but within that short time, we carry so much. So we must also learn to live, not just survive. To find moments of peace in the middle of chaos. To celebrate even the smallest victories. To allow ourselves to rest, to heal, and to dream again. Because our lives are not defined only by our struggles, but also by the joy, hope, and meaning we create along the way.

Patience teaches us to endure when things take longer than we hoped. Perseverance teaches us to keep moving forward, even when we fall again and again. And through it all, we are held by something greater, guided by faith, strengthened by community, and reminded that we are never truly alone.

So let this be a reminder, not just to the world, but to ourselves. Domestic workers are not invisible. We are not voiceless. We are not powerless. We are caregivers who nurture homes and families. We are providers who carry the weight of responsibility with courage. We are dreamers who continue to hope, even in the face of uncertainty. We are fighters who refuse to give up, no matter how difficult the journey becomes. We are individuals with stories that matter, with lives that deserve dignity, and with futures worth fighting for. And in every sense of the word, we are modern-day heroes.
