"My Voice Matters": Rowena’s Journey with The Voice of Domestic Worker

By Rowena

Before I found The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW), I often felt invisible—just another migrant trying to survive. But everything started to shift when I became a member of this powerful community. VODW changed my life in ways I never imagined. I became stronger. I learned to speak up. And most of all, I learned to fight for our rights as domestic workers—rights that are too often ignored or denied.

Learning to Believe in Myself Again

One of the most important things I gained from VODW is confidence. The workshops and training helped me develop skills I now use every day. Whether it's speaking English more clearly, using my phone for work tasks, or understanding documents—I’ve come to believe in my own ability to make things work. I can speak better now, not just in words, but from the heart.

Why Our Voices Matter

For me, advocacy is personal. I am living evidence that speaking out matters—regardless of status. Our voices carry the weight of truth. When we speak, we speak not just for ourselves, but for thousands of others who are still in silence. We must break that silence.

A Community That Hears You

Emotionally and socially, the support I’ve received from VODW is beyond words. For the first time in a long time, I felt heard. I felt seen. They validated my struggles—not just as a worker, but as a woman, as a migrant, as a human being. That kind of support can change someone’s world. It changed mine.

Knowing Our Rights, Raising Awareness

It is essential for domestic workers to know our legal rights. It’s not just about protecting ourselves—it’s about raising awareness and standing tall. We matter. Our work matters. And we deserve to be treated with dignity and fairness.

The Power of Creative Expression

Sharing my story in creative ways—whether through writing or speaking—has been healing. It reminds me of what I’ve survived. But more than that, it inspires others to speak too. When one voice rises, it makes space for many more.

Growing in Courage and Communication

One of the most impactful things VODW has done for me is help me communicate better, especially in front of a crowd. That may sound simple—but for someone who once lived in fear, it’s everything. Now I can face people and speak with strength, not shame.

Dreaming Forward

I dream of a future where domestic workers are recognized by the UK government—not as invisible laborers, but as essential contributors to society. I hope to see our visas reinstated, our work valued, and our presence respected.

I am Rowena.

I am a domestic worker.

I am not alone.

And my voice—our voice

will not be silenced.
