A Friend's Encouragement Led Me to Discover My Own Quiet Confidence By Sarah Ambalatan

I came to VODW because a friend told me the organisation could help me, and that simple piece of advice opened the door to six months to a year of classes in ESOL, IT, Mediacom, and Financial Literacy. I approached the experience with curiosity, admitting honestly that I had not been sure learning was still possible for me at this point in my life.

What I found, gently and steadily, was a growing sense of self. In my IT and ESOL classes, I picked up new skills while also reconnecting with a part of myself that may have gone quiet over years of demanding work. I describe the process simply as building confidence, a phrase that, while brief, reflects a meaningful and hard won shift. My graduation experience I call wonderful, a fitting reward for showing up and trying something I had once doubted was possible.

My thanks to my teachers are warm and sincere, appreciation for everything they gave me throughout the classes. Looking to the future, I hope that others like me will build more confidence, learn new skills, and most importantly, trust themselves, tiwala sa sarili, as I put it in my own words.

That phrase, trust in oneself, captures something essential about what VODW offers me beyond any single class, permission and encouragement to believe in my own capability. My story, modest in its telling but meaningful in its substance, reflects the quiet, steady confidence that VODW hopes every domestic worker can carry forward, confidence that ultimately fuels the wider fight for fair treatment, secure status, and the right to build a life of one's own choosing in the UK.
