Through Jean’s Eyes: An Unforgettable Isle of Wight Trip

ree

Every year during summer, as part of our yearly calendar, VODW members are given the opportunity to travel and experience different places across the UK. This tradition is not only about taking a break from work, but also about creating meaningful experiences together. By exploring new places, we gain a deeper awareness of the culture, history, and diversity around us.

These trips go beyond our campaigns and advocacy work—they provide us with time to bond, learn, and discover. They allow us to immerse ourselves in the richness of the UK, from its landscapes and landmarks to its vibrant communities. For our members, it becomes a valuable cultural journey, where we not only rest and recharge but also expand our horizons and strengthen our sense of belonging.

A Memorable Trip to the Isle of Wight with VODW

Last August, The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW) organized an unforgettable day trip to the scenic Isle of Wight, a picturesque island off the southern coast of England. It was my very first time visiting this charming destination, and though the day was a little windy with scattered clouds, my heart was full of excitement and anticipation.

Our adventure began early—we woke up around 5:00 a.m. to prepare for the three-hour coach journey ahead. To make the long ride more joyful, some of our colleagues sang karaoke, filling the bus with laughter and music. That sense of fun and togetherness set the perfect tone for the day.

Crossing the channel was another highlight. We boarded a passenger ferry and later a small barge, which made the journey even more thrilling. Knowing we were traveling to an island off the London coast gave the experience a special charm.

Upon arrival, we gathered for a group photo with the island’s beautiful backdrop—a snapshot of friendship and shared memories. Soon after, we enjoyed a packed lunch at a nearby pavilion, where we also had a taste of the local cuisine.

The true magic of the Isle of Wight revealed itself as we rode along its rugged coastline. The sight of the dramatic chalk rock formations of The Needles, with the vast golden sands of Shanklin Beach stretching out below, was breathtaking. Vibrant cliffs, sparkling blue waters, and lush greenery framed every view.

We capped the day with a walk along one of the island’s scenic coastal trails. Surrounded by unique geology and natural beauty, it felt like stepping into a postcard. The Isle of Wight left me not only with stunning memories but also with a deeper appreciation of the UK’s hidden treasures.
