Challenges of Domestic Workers Without Legal Status Rights Protection and Stability By Hafidah

Lack of protection, this is one of the heaviest realities faced by many domestic workers, especially for someone like me who does not have the right to work. Every day, I carry a quiet fear. A fear that is hard to explain, but always present, that one day, everything could suddenly be taken away. My job. My income. My chance to build a better future. Because the truth is, when your immigration status is not stable, no matter how hardworking or dedicated you are, nothing ever feels secure.

The question never leaves my mind, what if tomorrow, everything is gone? What if one day I am no longer allowed to work? What if I am forced to leave, even if I am not ready? What if everything I have worked so hard for disappears? This is the weight many domestic workers carry, a burden that is invisible, yet felt every single day.

All we really want is the chance to work with dignity. We want to contribute, to be part of society, to build a life with purpose. We are not asking for too much, we are simply asking for an opportunity. An opportunity to work legally, without fear. An opportunity to have security for our future.

I hope those in power can see the importance of domestic workers. We are the ones who take care of homes, children, and families. We are the quiet support behind people’s daily lives. And yet, despite everything we do, we are still often left without proper protection.

If we were given the right visa and the right to work, so many things would change. We would be able to work freely, without fear hanging over us every day. We would no longer go to sleep worrying that tomorrow we might lose our jobs. We would have the courage to speak up when something is wrong, knowing that there are laws that will protect us.

We would have hope. Because the truth is, the lack of legal protection is not just about work, it is about dignity. It is about our rights as human beings. It should not be this way. No one should have to live in fear every day just to work honestly. No one should be denied the chance to build a safe and stable future. We are domestic workers.

We are hardworking. We have dreams. We have value. And we deserve protection, rights, and the opportunity to work without fear, not just for today, but for the future we are trying to build every single day.
