As the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, I found myself reflecting on the past year and looking ahead to the new one. For many, the new year is a time for parties, resolutions, and celebrations, but for me, it is a time for reflection, love, and gratitude. As a domestic worker, I made the difficult choice to leave my family behind, traveling far from home in pursuit of a better life. It’s not always easy.
The nights can feel long, and the distance can feel heavy. But every choice I’ve made has been rooted in love. The love I have for my family and the desire to provide for those I hold closest to my heart. In this season of new beginnings, I wanted to share a heartfelt letter to my family. I hope it resonates with others who are far from home, and reminds everyone of the quiet courage and sacrifices that often go unseen.
Dear loved ones,
Happy New Year! I hope this letter finds you all in good health and high spirits. As I sit down to write to you on this first day of the year, my heart is full of a mixture of emotions, longing, gratitude, and hope. I miss you all terribly, and yet I feel immense gratitude for the opportunity to work hard and provide for our future.

Life as a domestic worker is not always easy. There are days when the work is exhausting, when loneliness sneaks in, and when challenges feel overwhelming. But every day, I remind myself why I do this. Your smiles, your laughter, your happiness, and your well-being are what keep me going. Knowing that my sacrifices allow you to live more comfortably, safely, and with more opportunities fills my heart with purpose.
I often think of our family traditions. The simple moments that made our home feel warm and full of love. I think of the delicious meals Mum lovingly prepares, the laughter around the table, and the way we care for one another in small, meaningful ways. It is these memories that keep me strong when I am far away. I look forward to the day when I can be home again, sharing stories, creating new memories, and embracing all of you without distance between us.
Until that day comes, please take care of yourselves. Know that no matter how far away I am, you are always on my mind and forever in my heart.
With all my love, Anabelle
As I close this letter, I want to extend a message to all domestic workers across the world. Your sacrifices, resilience, and love do not go unnoticed. You leave your families each day to provide for them, often enduring hardship and loneliness, and your strength is remarkable.
To those who employ domestic workers, I hope this letter serves as a gentle reminder that behind every task, every chore, and every duty is a human being with a heart, a family, and dreams of their own. Treat your workers with kindness, respect, and understanding.
As we step into this new year, let us make it one of love, patience, and compassion. Let us remember the power of small acts of care, the strength in sacrifice, and the importance of connection, no matter the distance.
May this year bring us closer to our loved ones, fill our homes with joy, and remind us all that even in sacrifice, love always finds a way.
