Goodbyes Are Not Endings. A Domestic Worker’s Reflection on Love and Growth By Arlene

Today, my heart feels lighter than it has in a long time. And it came from something simple, yet deeply meaningful, having a genuine conversation with someone I love. In a world that often moves too fast, taking time to truly talk, to listen, and to feel seen is a rare gift. That moment reminded me that connection, even across distance and change, still has the power to heal.

My heart feels light because I have finally embraced a difficult truth, letting go is not abandonment. Letting go is an act of deep, selfless love. It means trusting the bond we share enough to allow space for growth, change, and independence.

As I reflected today, gratitude filled my heart in quiet but powerful ways.

I felt a deep sense of fulfilment reconnecting with someone who is not just one thing in my life, but many friend, sister, daughter, and buddy all at once. Speaking with her reminded me of the strength of our bond, the closeness that time and distance cannot erase. That conversation wrapped my heart in warmth and reminded me that love does not weaken when we walk separate paths, it grows stronger.

I am also grateful for the success and love we have shared. Seeing the people I care about “spread their wings” is a beautiful reminder that we have nurtured one another well. Their courage to move forward is proof that love can exist without control, that guidance does not mean holding on tightly, and that support can come from cheering each other on, even from afar. Like true sisters, we lift one another when one of us feels tired, uncertain, or broken.

Today, I also experienced a shift in perspective. I no longer see “goodbye” as an ending. Instead, I now understand it as a beginning. A necessary step toward becoming stronger, braver, and more self-reliant. Goodbyes are not about loss; they are about trust in what lies ahead.

As a domestic worker, shared sacrifice is something I carry deeply in my heart. Leaving home was never an easy choice. It was driven by love, the same love that pushes us to dream of a brighter future for our families. We leave not because we want to be far away, but because we want those we love to have the freedom to succeed, to grow, and to soar.

I find comfort in the realization that giving someone space may be the most generous gift we can offer. Space allows people to discover who they are meant to be. Space allows dreams to take shape. Space allows love to breathe.

We, as domestic workers, leave our families for years, sometimes for decades, holding onto hope as tightly as we hold onto our faith. The moment we step out the door, we, too, spread our wings. We walk forward carrying sacrifice, courage, and determination. We look toward the future believing that no obstacle can stop us, because our journey is rooted in love, respect, and dignity.

Today, my heart is grateful, not because life is easy, but because love remains strong. And as long as we continue to soar toward our dreams with kindness and dignity, our hearts will always find their way back to light.
