Congratulations to Jhona, a courageous member of The Voice of Domestic Workers UK, for being selected as one of the finalists in the International Domestic Workers Federation’s (IDWF) Voices for Change Art Contest, held in solidarity with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Her achievement is not only a celebration of artistic talent but a powerful moment of truth-telling, bringing visibility to stories that are too often silenced.

In her powerful piece “Green Pasture,” Jhona turns one of the most painful chapters of her life into something quietly courageous and deeply hopeful. Her photograph reflects the weight of her experience with an abusive employer, a time marked by fear, mistreatment, and a loneliness so heavy it seemed to shape every moment of her day. Those shadows are unmistakable in her work. Yet, even in that darkness, Jhona chooses to reveal a soft, steady glow, a symbol of hope, faith, and the promise of a new beginning. It is a reminder that even in the most suffocating circumstances, the human spirit searches sometimes desperately for a path toward light.
This contrast is what makes “Green Pasture” so profound. It does not erase the trauma she endured; rather, it honors the truth of domestic workers who carry their pain in silence. But just as importantly, it honors the strength required to keep going, to trust in the possibility of a different life, and to believe, even faintly, that healing is possible. With the support of The Voice of Domestic Workers, Jhona’s journey took a hopeful turn. She found more than assistance, she found a community. A family. A circle of women who understood her without explanation, whose warmth reminded her that goodness still exists. As Jhona reflects, “Their positivity and warmth reminded me that goodness still exists and that empathy can transform our surroundings.”
Her words reveal a gentle but powerful truth, community can reshape a life. Kindness can restore dignity. Solidarity can turn wounds into wisdom. Her artwork stands as a living testimony to that transformation. It teaches us that domestic workers are never alone in their struggles, even when their suffering happens behind closed doors. It reminds us that through collective organising, fear can become freedom.
Oppression can be transformed into dignity. Isolation can be replaced by belonging.
“Green Pasture” is far more than a photograph, it is a reclamation. A reclaiming of voice. A reclaiming of hope. A reclaiming of a future once overshadowed by cruelty. In Jhona’s image, we see not only her journey but the shared journey of countless domestic workers who rise despite hardship, who heal despite injustice, and who continue to stand with a courage that is nothing short of extraordinary.
Her work is a tribute to resilience and an invitation. An invitation for all of us to listen, to care, and to stand alongside domestic workers as they reclaim their stories, their dignity, and their power. Congratulations once again, Jhona. Your voice and your light shine through your art.
