Rising with Courage: Cristina’s Journey with The Voice of Domestic Workers

ree

Before joining The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW), I often doubted myself. I carried not only the weight of hard work, but the fear and uncertainty that so many migrant domestic workers live with every day. But since becoming part of this powerful community, my life—and my beliefs—have changed.

VODW gave me the strength to believe that my story matters. That my voice can create meaningful change—in my life and in the lives of others. I’ve learned to raise awareness among other migrant domestic workers, encouraging them to stand up and assert their rights. This journey hasn’t just made me more confident—it has made me braver, more focused, and more committed to creating a future of justice and dignity for all.

Growth Through Learning

Through VODW, I’ve come to understand that a positive mindset, resilience, and dedication are vital to personal growth. I’ve learned to face challenges with determination, using the tools and training from VODW to stay grounded, even when the road is hard. Public speaking, once something I feared, is now a skill I am actively working on—and proud of.

Empowerment Through Speaking Out

Public speaking has become a powerful tool in my transformation. It has boosted my self-confidence, made me feel more connected to others, and helped me embrace who I am. When I speak, I feel a sense of dignity—and I know that I’m helping other domestic workers feel stronger, too.

A Community That Lifts You Up

The community I’ve found in VODW has been a lifeline. Emotionally and socially, they’ve helped me break free from the isolation I once felt. I now experience joy, support, and genuine connection—things that are vital when you’re far from home and facing hardship. The bonds I’ve built here have made me feel safe and seen.

Knowing Our Rights to Protect Ourselves

It is essential that domestic workers understand their legal rights. This knowledge is our shield against exploitation—against wage theft, long hours, and unsafe work conditions. VODW makes sure we are informed, aware, and empowered to stand up for fair treatment and decent work. Without this knowledge, we are vulnerable. With it, we are unstoppable.

The Power of Sharing Our Stories

Telling my story—creatively and honestly—was emotional. It made me feel excited, vulnerable, and empowered all at once. But most of all, it reminded me that sharing is a form of strength. It opens the door to understanding, healing, and change—not only for me but for everyone who listens.

The Gift of Confidence and Purpose

One of the most important things VODW has given me is confidence. I can now imagine myself standing in front of a large crowd as a spokesperson, using my voice to advocate for our rights. That vision was once impossible. Now, it’s within reach. VODW believed in me, supported me, and helped me believe in myself.

Looking Ahead: A Future of Peace and Freedom

My dreams are clear. I want a better quality of life, a place to call home, and a small business that provides steady income. I dream of peace, freedom, and success—of strong relationships with my family and a life where I am not just surviving, but thriving.

I am Cristina.

I am a domestic worker,

a survivor, a leader in the making.

With the support of VODW,

I am no longer afraid to dream—or to speak.

And I know now: my story can change the world.
