The Strength Behind Every Overseas Mother’s New Year By Ma.Annalyn

Being far from home is never easy. But during the New Year, the distance feels even heavier.

While others gather around tables filled with food and laughter, while fireworks light up the sky and families embrace at midnight, I often find myself in a quiet room, holding my phone tightly, waiting for the clock to strike twelve in a different time zone.

The silence can feel so loud. It echoes with everything I am missing, familiar voices, warm hugs, shared meals, and the simple comfort of being surrounded by the people I love most.

Loneliness visits more often during these moments. It sits beside me and reminds me that I cannot kiss my sons goodnight. That I cannot hear my nieces laughing in the same room. That another year has passed without us celebrating together.

But even in that silence, I hold on to something stronger than loneliness. I hold on to my “why.” My sons. My nieces. Their dreams. Their future. They are my reason. They are my strength. When I feel tired, when my body aches from work, when my heart feels too heavy, I look at their photos. I replay their voice messages. I remember their smiles. Even through a small screen, their faces give me courage.

They remind me that every sacrifice has meaning. Every tear has purpose. Every lonely New Year is part of building something better for them. I stay hopeful by holding on to the small joys.

A simple message that says, “We miss you.” A late-night video call where we count down together, even if we are oceans apart. A prayer whispered quietly before midnight. A promise to myself that this season of distance will not last forever.

Hope, for me, is not pretending that it doesn’t hurt. Hope is choosing to stay strong even when my heart longs for home. Hope is waking up every day and continuing, even when part of me wishes I could be somewhere else. I remind myself that this distance is temporary, but the future I am building for my family will last. The education I am helping to provide. The security I am creating. The opportunities I am opening for them.

One day, we will celebrate the New Year together again. No screens. No time difference. No countdown through a phone. Just us.Just family.Just laughter filling the room. Until that day comes, I carry them in my heart. They are my reason. They are my strength. They are my New Year hope.
