To My Son: A Love That Travels With You

My boy, my heart, my morning light…

These are the first words of a poem I wrote for my son — words that poured from a mother’s heart full of love, longing, and pride. In every line, I try to capture what so many of us parents feel but sometimes cannot say: the deep ache of separation, the strength of unconditional love, and the unshakable hope we carry for our children’s futures.

Life as a parent — and for many like me, a domestic worker — often means making painful sacrifices. Sometimes it means being far from the ones we love most in order to give them a better chance, a better life. It means smiling through video calls, sending our love through parcels and prayers, and holding our breath for every milestone we miss.

This poem is a message to my son, and to every child waiting for a parent to come home. It’s a reminder that love knows no borders, and that no matter the distance, our hearts are never far.

My boy, my heart, my morning light,

You’ve given meaning to my nights.

Each laugh, each tear, each step you’ve made,

Are memories that will never fade.

Though distance now may stretch its hand,

And life may weave what we don’t plan,

My love for you will always stay,

A compass for your every day.

I leave, but know, I’m never far,

My soul is with you where you are.

In whispered winds, in starry skies,

In every dream behind your eyes.

Be brave, be kind, and always true,

The world is better with you in view.

And when the path feels dark or steep,

Remember, son, my love runs deep.

So go and shine, your story’s begun,

Forever proud of you, my son.
